Both molecular ordering and alignment of polymer semiconductor films are critical factors that strongly affect the polymer film based device performance. Herein, we demonstrate a simple one-step process that can induce the formation and assembly of well-ordered poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT) nanowires (NWs) into aligned films by shear-coating the polymer solutions containing a good solvent additive with low volatility. As the plate that covers the P3HT solution is mechanically sheared across the substrate in one direction, crystalline P3HT NWs are formed by the aid of the good solvent additive during evaporation of the solvent mixture, and then assembled into oriented films driven by the shear force along the direction of shear. Consequently, highly aligned P3HT NW films exhibited approximately 10-fold enhancement in the average charge carrier mobility compared to pristine films. |
