Preparation of modified magnesium oxide and their enhancement of mechanical properties by stereocomplex structure |

Biodegradable polymers, such as poly(L-lactide) (PLLA) and poly(lactide-co-glycolide) (PLGA) are very useful in many biomedical applications, but, inflammation that was induced by an acidic microenvironment after degrading polyester has been pointed out as a major problem. Poly(D-lactide) was grafted on surface of MgO nanoparticle via surface-initiated ring-opening polymerization for inducing stereocomplexation. Surface-modified MgO nanoparticles were successfully synthesized and their effect on pH neutralization was confirmed. Moreover, tensile strength of nanocomposite consisted of surface-modified MgO nanoparticles and PLLA matrix was much higher than control PLLA matrix. Consequently, the nanocomposites with stereocomplex are effective in improving biocompatibility on pH neutralization as well as enhancing mechanical properties of PLLA matrix. Therefore, this nanocomposite could be potentially used as biodegradable stents and various biomedical implants. |
