Crystal and Molecular Structures of Poly(11-undecalactone) |

The crystal structures of aliphatic polylactones, -(-O-(CH2)m- CO-)n-, have been studied by many research groups. Poly(β- propiolactone) (m = 2) and poly(δ-valerolactone) (m = 4) were previously reported. Poly(4-hydroxybutyrate) (m = 3) and poly(ε-caprolactone) (m = 5) were also reported in the literature. However, polylactones synthesized by macrolides have not been reported except 16-membered macrolide (PPDL). The crystal structures of poly(11- undecalactone) (PUDL, m = 10) synthesized by lipase-catalyzed polycondensation with macrolide was investigated by X-ray powder diffraction and electron diffraction of single crystal grown from dilute solution. Also, the morphology of the PUDL single crystals was studied by means of transmission electron microscopy and atomic force microscopy. The conformation and packing analysis of PUDL crystals have been studied in detail taking into account both diffraction data and energy calculations by using Cerius program. |
