Poly[oxy(phenylalkylthiomethyl)ethylene]s (Ph#TEs) and poly[oxy(phenyl-alkylsulfonylmethyl)ethylene]s (Ph#SEs) were synthesized. The thioether-containing polymers (Ph#TEs) were synthesized by reacting poly[oxy(chloro-methyl)ethylene] (CE, poly(epichlorohydrin)) with excess amounts of sodium ω-phenyl-1-alkanethiolates. The sulfone-containing polymers (Ph#SEs) were synthesized by oxidizing the Ph#TEs using m-chloroperoxybenzoic acid. Glass transition temperatures (Tg's) and melting temperatures (Tm's) of the polymers were measured using a differential scanning calorimeter. The effect of side chain length on Tg was studied. Thermal properties of the polymers were compared with the polymers with alkylthiomethyl or alkylsulfonylmethyl side groups. Polymers with long side chains showed ordered phases. The ordered phase of the polymers were studied using differential scanning calorimetry, cross-polarizing optical microscopy, and X-ray diffraction. |
