Fluoropolymers have attracted much attention because of their unique properties such as low surface energy, liquid crystalline behavior, and so on. These polymers are known to exhibit these properties due to the amphiphilicity or rigidity of perfluorinated alkyl segments. In this study, we synthesized novel fluorinated polymers consisting of hydrophilic oxyethylene backbone and fluorinated side groups by chemical modification. We believe that these polymer have increased amphiphilicity because the backbone, oxyethylene unit is hydrophilic. We characterized the polymers using small angle x-ray diffraction, differential scanning calorimeter, polarized optical microscopy, contact angle goniometry, and electron spectroscopy for chemical analysis. From these characterizations, we found that the fluorinated polymers possess double layered structures and the CF3 end groups exists on the top of the surface. These polymers have very large water contact angle. |
