제목 Cu(I)-mediated Radical Polymerization of N-Isopropylacrylamide
초록 Transition metal-mediated radical polymerization has been well-known as a powerful tool to prepare polymers with controlling the molecular weight and the architecture via radical mechanism. Copper halide/tertiary amine complexes have been used in radical polymerizations of methyl methacrylate or styrene in non-aqueous medium such as toulene at high temperature relatively. Polymerization of N-isopropylacrylamide has been known for a long time to produce the corresponding thermo-responsive hydrogel exhibiting an abrupt phase transition near 32oC. In this respect, we found new methodology to prepare the hydrogel via transition metal-mediated radical polymerization in aqueous medium. Especially, a proper choice of alkyl halide as an initiator was found to play an important role in the polymerization of water-soluble monomer. We will discuss the reaction condition to control the molecular weight of the formed hydrogel in this presentation.
