Hydrogen sulfide (H2S), a kind of reactive sulfide species (RSS), has been already known the most important gasotransmitter. It plays significant roles in the cardiovascular, immune and nervous systems. For sensing H2S, we synthesized azidobenzyl-substituted resorufin (ABR) as a H2S-responsive fluorogenic molecular probe. Based on the structure of ABR, we devised nanoprobes co-assembled with co-surfactant molecules (nanoABR). The internal environment of nanoABR was engineered by introducing differently charged (cationic, anionic or neutral) co-surfactant molecules to modulate the inner polarity. In this way, we have found that the nanoABR with cationic co-surfactant showed high reactivity towards H2S with a calculated detection limit of ~18 nM. The enhanced sensing characteristics allowed practical bioapplications to cell imaging and in vitro diagnostics of diabetes with blood samples from mouse models. |
