Synthesis and characterization of phenol-formaldehyde resin based cardanol and its application to antibacterial coating |

Phenol-formaldehyde resins were prepared through the reaction of nonylphenol, 3-pentadecylphenol (PDP), cashew nut shell liquid (CNSL) and cardanol with paraformaldehyde under acidic conditions. The molar mass and structural characteristics of the synthesized polymer were analyzed. The novolacs using CNSL and cardanol had higher molar mass, which is attributed to cross-linking probability of CNSL and cardanol with unsaturated bonds. Then, the antibacterial property of synthesized novolacs was examined. Against the E. coli., the novolac synthesized from cardanol showed 97% or more of antibacterial property and the same is true for the novolac from PDP. In the case of novolacs from nonylphenol and CNSL showed a relatively low antibacterial property of 85%. Comprehensive analysis of the results shows that the prepared novolacs can be used as antibacterial coating materials. |
