The utilization of high molecular-weight chitosan was limited by insoluble in water. For these reasons, molecular weight of chitosan was degraded to apply in various field by initiator agent. Thermal dissociation initiator agent was added to the chitosan solution, under nitrogen atmosphere at 60 ℃. Its molecular weight was changed by reaction time and quantity of initiator agent. The molecular weight of reactant was measured by gel permeation chromatograph (GPC). The results showed that degree of degradation of chitosan molecular weight was depended on reaction time and quantity of initiator agent. The characterization of degraded chitosan was analyzed by GPC, FT-IR, 1H-NMR, Viscosity, and DSC. Therefore, degraded chitosan can be apply to biomedical field.
