Surface Modification of CNT Membrane by Grafting Polymerization |

Membranes based on carbon nanotubes (CNTs) have been highlighted as an emerging technology for water purification application. These membranes use CNTs as cylindrical pores across an otherwise impermeable thin film. They are promising for high permeability, high selectivity due to rapid flux through their hollow interior. Nevertheless, present CNT membranes suffer from a trade-off between selectivity and permeability. Due to diameter of CNT, it is difficult to have high rejection for ionic species. Accordingly, this study intended to develop a new technique for modifying the surface of CNT membranes. The raw CNT membranes were altered using the following modification sequence: graft polymerization (methacrylic acid (MA)-membrane); cross-linking of grafted polymer chains (ethylene diamine (ED)-membrane); and, substitution of functional groups (succinic acid (SA)-membrane). And then, the effect of different graft polymerization methods on flux and rejection was investigated. |
