The feasibility of macroalgal biomass as a resource for biorefinery |
초록 |
Biorefinery has received a lot of attention as an effective alternative to the fossil-based refinery industry. Starch- and lignocellulosic biomasses have been considered as major contributors for biorefinery. Although small countries like Korea do not have sufficient lands for cultivating energy crops, some innovative ideas on regional circumstances may open a new horizon in securing biomass for biorefinery. Korea has relatively large sea area for seaweed cultivation thanks to the nature of peninsula. Together with its fast growth rate, the seaweed biomass can be a potential feedstock for biofuel production. We have tried to develop a marine biorefinery system utilizing carbohydrates in brown algae for the production of biofuels. We have also evaluated the economic feasibility of seaweed biomass as alternative feedstocks for biorefinery and carried out well-to-wheels analysis on biofuels produced from seaweed biomass through comparative studies with other terrestrial biomasses. |
