Synthesis, self-assembly, and catalytic activity of a 1H-imidazole amphiphile in an aqueous solution |

We prepared a polycatenar 1H-imidazole amphiphile having a structure in which a 1H-imidazole head was connected through a benzene ring to a pheny group having three oligo(ethylene glycol) chains and studied its supramolecular assembly by fluorescence spectroscopy and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). When an aqueous solution of the amphiphile was deposited onto a carbon-coated copper grid and dried, helical structures with diameters of ~200-300 nm were imaged by TEM. The 1H-imidazole amphiphile showed the catalytic activity in the gelation of TEOS. In the presence of the amphiphile, TEOS was hydrolyzed and gelated to form fibrous and spherical silica at neutral pH. No silica was produced when imidazole was used instead of the amphiphile, suggesting that the self-assembled aggregate of the amphiphile was responsible for the gelation of TEOS. |
