Polyurethanes with multi-functionalities from vegetable oil-based polyols for sustainable coating applications |

Growing concerns over long-term environmental and waste management issues direct the use of renewable resources for sustainable polymers in the polymer industry. In this study, we synthesize soybean oil (SO) based polyol (MSO-2) having two hydroxyl functionality using a one-step thiol-ene click reaction between SO and 2-mercaptoethanol (ME). The other functional groups such as silane, fluorine, and PEG were introduced in MSO-2 polyol by thiol-ene reaction between MSO-2 and thiol-terminated chemicals to afford MSO-based multifunctional polyol. As a example for coating applications, series of polyurethane (PU) coatings were prepared from the MSO-2 and silane modified MSO-2 polyols. The properties of the resulting PU coating properties, such as thermal, physico-mechanical, and anticorrosion performances, were investigated. The results suggested that the PU coatings from multifunctional polyols are promising alternatives to conventional PU coatings. |
