Recently, there have been considerable attentions for biomimetic sensors and actuators such as artificial muscles. As the electroactive polymer actuator, ionic polymer-metal composites(IPMC) is one of the most promising smart materials due to its large bending behaviors with low applied voltage. The deformation is attributed to water drag associated with the unidirectional migration of counter cations in the ion-exchange membrane. But it necessarilly require some humidity to function because water will easily evaporate in dry condition and water electrolysis will be induced around 1V. For practical applications, it is needed to overcome this definite limitation. In this study, new IPMC actuators were prepared by using various solvents. They are composed of ionic polymer, P(VDF-co-HPF)-g-PSSA on which is chemically deposited with a noble metal such as platinum. Various nonaqueous solvents and ionic liquids are used as a substitute for water. They were characterized by impedance measurement, differential scanning calorimeter(DSC) and laser displacement meter. The effectiveness of new solvents, air-operating stability and air-evaporative resistivity were examined by various actuation tests. |
