Shape memory polymer (SMP) is one of the important smart materials that can regain its original shape by application of external stimuli. In this study, chemically crosslinked shape memory polymers was prepared by a melt blending of two different commerically available ethylene copolymers, poly(ethylene-co-acrylic acid) (EAA) and poly(ethylene-co-methyl acrylate-co-glycidyl methacrylate) (EMAGMA). The EAA/EMAGMA blends could form a chemically crosslinked network via interchain esterfication reaction between carboxyl and epoxy groups existed in each polymer chains during molding at high temperature without any crosslinking agents. Thermomechanical properties and shape memoroy behavior were investigated by DSC, DMA and tensile test. The results revealed that the blends have two well-separated thermal transitions and, as a result, they exhibited triple shape memory behavior. The developed ethylene copolymer based SMP can have many potential applications. |
