Pearlescent pigments are widely utilized in various application fields including cosmetic, architecture, and automotive topcoat. Especially, multi-color pearlescent pigments composed of multi-layered structure of mica base, titania, and silica materials are receiving wide attentions due to its various interference colors created by each layers. Nevertheless, there is other important characteristics like water repellency and spreadability besides the color saturations. To overcome the hydrophilicity of outermost layer of multi-color pearlescent consisted of titania, various silanes were employed to assign hydrophobicity. Under our experimental conditions, multi-color pearlescent pigment treated by n-Octyltriethoxysilane exhibited the most improved water repellant and spreadability on hydrophobic surface due to the longest hydrocarbon chains of silane. We expect this facile surface modification methods may directly apply to the pearlescent industry requiring super hydrophobic property. |
