제목 Unveiling the role of metal and metal oxide dopants in the photocatalytic and photothermal degradation of aromatic volatile organic compounds over ZnO-based catalysts
초록 Dopants play a vital role in boosting the performance of photocatalysts, particularly in energy-intensive chemical reactions such as C(sp2)-C(sp2) bond activation. In this study, the effects of Cu(I) and zero-valent Ag in the ZnO-based photocatalytic and photothermal degradation of functionalized aromatic volatile organic compounds (VOCs) were investigated.

UV-vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (UV-DRS) results showed that the addition of several metal and metal dopants at 0.5 wt.% effectively shifted the photocatalyst’s band gap into the visible light range, whereas photoluminescence (PL) emission spectroscopy results showed that the introduction of heteroatoms promoted better electron-hole separation as compared to pristine ZnO. In terms of the degradation characteristics, the introduction of the dopants appeared to have both positive and negative effects on the removal efficiencies for different pollutants. From the performance curves, it was concluded that the dopants promote preferential activation of C(sp2)-C(sp2) bond, showing the extent of activation with high dependency on the functional group attached to the aromatic ring.
