제목 Preparation and birefringence of the reactive liquid crystals bearing an acetylenic moiety
초록 We have developed the synthetic methods of the new reactive liquid crystal compounds bearing an acetylene moiety as a π-conjugation extender to improve the birefringence. In this study, 2-methyl hydroquinone and 9, 9-dialkyl-fluorene-diols were used as mesogenic cores. Structural characterizations were performed by the general analytic methods using NMR, Mass, and FT-IR spectroscopy. Mesomorphic behaviors of the new compounds were investigated by utilizing DSC and POM. In order to evaluate the birefringence of the new reactive liquid crystals with PEM apparatus, uniaxially oriented films were formed by orientation of the sample on the alignment layer and then cross-linked by uv light to form an optical anisotropic network. We have observed that the introduction of an acetylene group resulted in approximately 20% increment of the birefringence compared to that of the corresponding reference compound which did not have a triple bond.
