Graphene Sheets with Non-Covalently Coupled Magnetic Nanoparticles |

The electronic properties of graphene could be engineered by coupling it with organic or inorganic nanomaterials. The best functionalization strategies try to accomplish coupling of materials with minimum perturbation to inherent properties of graphene. Non-coavalent coupling establishes interaction between functionalized nanomaterials to graphene through pi-pi stacking or Vander Waals interaction. Here we present the synthesis of ligands with pyrene at one terminal and substituted with dopamine at the other terminal. Ligands with different spacer lengths between the above terminals were synthesized and characterized. The pyrene end is capable of π-π stacking interaction with graphene surface while the dopamine substituted end has strong affinity to oxidic nanoparticles due to the double hydroxyl groups. We present results from first experiments about assembling nanomaterials from graphene and iron oxide nanoparticles. |
