Preparation and characteristics of organic/inorganic hybrid hard coating on PMMA substrate |

The scratch-resistant coating materials on transparent plastic substrate surface were prepared by using urethane acrylate, polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane(POSS), and modified silica sol. POSS was prepared by a sol-gel reaction of organo-trialkoxysilane using acidic catalyst. Silica sol was modified with organoalkoxysilane to form chemical bonds on a substrate. Photoinitiator was added to a coating mixture and the coated layer was crosslinked with UV-radiation. UV-cured hard coating on a PMMA substrate resulted in a highly uniform and transparent coating layer. Fourier transform infrared spectrometer was used to characterize the chemical bonds of condensation products from sol-gel reaction. Surface hardness of hard coating was evaluated by a pencil hardness test. Transmittance of hard coating was investigated by UV/Vis spectrometer. The scratch resistance of PMMA surface had a close relation with the composition of organic and inorganic components. |
