Superporous hydrogels(SPH) are characterized by three dimensional network structure with numerous pores with sizes ranging up to several hundreds micrometers. Fast and high water absorbent properties result from the presence of large pores, and such properties allow applications of SPHs in drug delivery, e.g. application in gastric retention. While current SPHs posses fast and large swelling properties in distilled water, they have low swelling ratio in acidic pH. For this reason, our research aimed at the development of SPHs with enhanced swelling properties in low pH. In this study, the SPHs of poly(acrylamide-co-acrylic acid)(P(Am-co-AA)/Chitosan interpenetrating polymer networks(IPNs) were prepared, and the effects of composition and synthetic method on the swelling properties were investigated.
