Evaluation of PEG/PVA Hydrogels Prepared by a Freezing-Thawing Method and Gamma-Ray Irradiation |

Poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) and polyethylene glycol (PEG) are excellent candidates as biomaterials because of their inherent water-soluble, non-toxic, and biocompatible properties. Gamma-rays have been used to cross-link and sterilize the biomaterials instead of a cross-linking agent and heating method which influence the mechanical properties of biomaterials. In this work, to improve the mechanical strength of the PVA hydrogel, the PEG was blended with PAG in water. The PEG/PVA hydrogels were prepared by using a freezing-thawing method and gamma-ray irradiation technique. The prepared hydrogels were characterized by measuring physical properties such as gel content, hydration, FTIR, and TGA analysis. The enhanced mechanical strength of the PEG/PVA hydrogels was confirmed by using compressive strength. It was also confirmed that the PEG/PVA hydrogels were non-toxic by using a cell count kit-8 (CCK-8) assay. |
