A series of three-dimensional star polymers with well-defined nanostructures were synthesized by metal catalyzed living radical polymerization. The resulting star polymers were characterized for size and shape in solid state and solution and by chromatography, light scattering, TEM and AFM. Precise introduction of functional groups to within the arm, the end of the arm, and core gave interesting phenomenon. For example, the core-functionalized star polymer exhibited molecular recognition. Additionally, amphiphilic star block copolymers with a hydrophilic block exterior, a hydrophobic block interior, and a catalyst core improved the catalytic reaction of hydrophobic substrate to hydrophilic product in comparison to small molecule catalyst by concentration effect of the substrate into the star polymer core. |
