For petroleum pitch-based carbon materials, physical properties of pitch precursors are significantly influenced by chemical composition of raw materials. Therefore it is important to start from appropriate raw materials to obtain pitch precursors with desired properties. In the current study, characteristics of three petroleum residues were analyzed and compared for petroleum based pitch synthesis. They are pyrolysis fuel oil (PFO), fluid catalytic cracking decant oil (FCC-DO), and vacuum residue (VR). The petroleum residues are composed of various polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and depending on the types of PAHs in the residues, the boiling point distributions are determined; PFO shows a broad distribution of 130~700℃, whereas FCC-DO and VR have relatively narrow distributions of 200~680℃ and 380~740℃, respectively. Effects of such characteristics of the residues on petroleum pitch precursors were characterized. |
