Synthesis and Characterization of Supramolecular, Quasi-One-Dimensional, and Semiconducting Complexes |

Platinum complexes of the type [Pt(NH2R)4][PtCl4] are considered to be of interest in materials science as they can be regarded as rare examples of self-assembled supramolecular structures with a metallic main-chain. Among these materials, Magnus’ green salt, [Pt(NH3)4][PtCl4] was synthesized almost 200 years ago. This salt and its isostructural derivatives are largely insoluble in water and common organic solvents, which restricts the processing of these materials. Here we report the synthesis and characterization of novel platinum-based supramolecular materials by the introduction of polyamines to the platinum backbone. The structure of these compounds was investigated using FT-IR, X-ray diffraction, and TEM. The solubility in water and various common solvents was studied and the semiconducting properties assessed. |
