We produced 3-dimensionally macrochanneled poly(ε-caprolactone) scaffolds for tissue engineering, which have a tailored porous core-dense shell structure using nonsolvent induced phase separation (NIPS)-based 3D plotting. A PCL/acetone solution was deposited in a nonsolvent bath to solidify PCL filaments with porous core-dense shell structure through exchange of solvent and nonsolvent. In particular, this unique structure, which forms dense shell on the outside of the PCL filaments, can be obtained when water nonsolvent contacts a PCL/acetone solution. Furthermore, the thickness of the dense shell can be controlled by changing the composite of nonsolvent (EtOH/water). As the water content increases in the coagulation bath, the thickness of the dense shell increases. The mechanical properties of the scaffolds, measured by tensile strength tests, increased with an increase in the thickness of dense shell of PCL filaments. |
