Boosting photoelectrochemical water splitting of BiVO4 by introduction of hole extraction layer |

As the development of oxygen-releasing co-catalysts (OECs) is actively underway, the customized integration of these OECs with photonoids is expected to be a suitable way to achieve high efficiency solar auxiliary water separation. Here, we show that the photoelectrochemical performance of a black phosphorene (BP) layer pre-optimized OEC / BiVO4 (OEC: NiOOH, MnOx and CoOOH) systems inserted between OEC and BiVO4 can be improved by 1.2 to 1.6 times. OEC overlay can suppress BP self oxidation to achieve high durability. A photocurrent density of 4.48 mAcm-2 at 1.23 V for the reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE) is achieved by NiOOH / BP / BiVO4 photoanode. It has been found that intrinsic p-type BP can improve hole extraction from BiVO4 and extend hole trapping life at the BiVO4 surface. This study describes the design of BP-based devices for application in the solar-to-fuel conversion and proposes a promising nexus between semiconductors and electrocatalysts. |
