In this study, we examined the influence of various inhibitors including conventional thermodynamic hydrate inhibitors (THIs) and kinetic hydrate inhibitors (KHIs) on thermodynamic and kinetics behaviors of CH4 hydrate formation. Amino acids and ionic liquids which are known to function as both THI and KHI were used to understand the hydrate inhibition mechanism. First, we measured three-phase equilibria of CH4 hydrate in the presence of inhibitors to determine the effect of inhibitors on gas hydrate stability conditions. In addition, the effect of inhibitors on the structural transition of CH4 hydrate was confirmed by powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD). Furthermore, the gas uptake measurement was conducted to examine the hydrate conversion in the presence of inhibitors. Moreover, differential scanning calorimeter (DSC) was used to measure the induction time of hydrate formation and the heat of dissociation (∆Hd) of CH4 hydrate in the presence of inhibitors in order to evaluate performance as KHI. These experimental results will provide fundamental understanding of hydrate inhibition mechanism regarding the synergism of hydrate inhibitors. |
