In a selective solvent that dissolves only one of the blocks, diblock copolymers self-associate into micelles with soluble coronas and insoluble cores. These micelles can solubilize otherwise insoluble substances in the cores so that they can be suitable for colloidal stabilization, drug delivery, and so on. In this study, fluorescent dyes, which are insoluble in toluene, were solubilized in a toluene solution of polystyrene-poly(4-vinly pyridine), PS-PVP, diblock copolymer micelles by selective incorporation of dyes into the PVP cores. Then, thin films of PS-PVP micelle-encapsulated dyes were fabricated by spin-coating from the toluene solution and their optical properties were studied. In addition, we tuned emitting colors of the dyes in the cores of micelles by doping with a different dye. |
