Process Synthesis of Bio-Ethanol Production via Fermentation of Brown Algae |

This work describes the ethanol production from seaweeds (Saccharina japonica) based on 3,840,000 ton/year of dry feed was designed using Gams software. Project was divided into three phases namely; pretreatment, fermentation and purification. Different process alternatives such as acid thermal hydrolysis and simple hot water wash was selected and modeled for pre-treatment phase. Pre-treatment reactor and simultaneous saccharification and fermentation (SSF) reactors were modelled using response surface methodology based on experimental results from the literature. Distillation columns along with molecular sieves were used to recover fuel grade ethanol (99.5%) from fermentation broth. The key challenge during purification phase is high energy consumption. Therefore, two different routes for solid separation were incorporated. The objective of this study is to optimize the structure and decision variables in the superstructure by minimizing the energy requirement of an entire plant. |
