Membrane bioreactors (MBRs) are an established alternative to conventional clarifier based wastewater treatment technology with a number of advantages. However, membrane fouling, which will increase filtration resistance and energy consumption, has highly hampered the widespread application of this technology. In this study, a submerged MBR with waste lime support carrier was used and operated continuously to investigate its filtration characteristics and pollutant removal performance under various fluxes. As the air flow rate increased under the same support carrier volume fraction, membrane filtration time increased. The pollutant removal efficiency was improved because the effective mixed liquor suspended solids concentration and effective solid retention time increased within MBR as the support carrier volume fraction increased. Therefore, we found that the MBR process using a waste lime support carrier can mitigate membrane fouling and membrane filtration time can be extended. |
