Controlled/living radical polymerization has been known to be an useful technique for a preparation of well-defined polymer structure by controlling molecular weight, molecular weight distribution and tailored architecture. Although RAFT has been discovered more recently, it endows several advantages over NMP or ATRP. However, few successes with RAFT have been reported for an emulsion system, colloidal instability is the major problem due to an observation of oily layer or coagulation. In this study, the careful technique of the emulsion polymerization is designed to solve these problems. The effects of various concentrations of the RAFT agent on the polymerization rate, molecular weight, molecular weight distribution, and particle size and its distribution were investigated using various techniques. |
