In a selective solvent for one of the blocks, diblock copolymers self-assemble into nanometer-sized micelles consisting of a soluble corona and an insoluble core. A single-layered film of diblock copolymer micelles can serve as a structured template for synthesizing and guiding various nanoparticles. Optically or magnetically active arrays of oxide nanoparticles such as zinc oxides and iron oxides were fabricated from these monolayers of diblock copolymer micelles, combining with oxygen plasma. Solvent vapor treatment also improved long-range orders in arrays of diblock copolymer micelles. In addition, hierarchical self-assemblies of small and large diblock copolymer micelles were created because formation of hybridized micelles of dissimilar diblock copolymers was restricted. From the non-hybridizing mixture of diblock copolymer micelles, hierarchical arrays of two different types of nanoparticles were synthesized. |
