Ocean cultivation has various advantages such as mixing from waves and large cultivable area. Photobioreactor (PBR) designs make successful ocean cultivation of the microalgae possible. In this study, three type of PBRs were designed and their performance were investigated for microalgal cultivation. Floating Cube PBR (FC-PBR), Tubular Model PBR (TM-PBR), and Serial Tubular PBR (ST-PBR) were used and Tetraselmis sp. MBEyh01L was cultivated in the coast of Young-Heung island, Incheon, Korea, during seventeen days at summer. As the results, ST-PBR showed highest biomass productivity, followed by TM-PBR and FC-PBR sequentially. Overall biomass productivity of 17.9, 7.3, and 5.8 g/m2/day were obtained in each PBRs. FC-PBRs failed to control broth temperature and light transmittance was lowest among the PBRs. This result indicates that light transmittance and capability of temperature control has to be considered for designing the PBRs for ocean cultivation of the microalgae. |
