Structure-dependent theranostic functions of supramolecular peptide nano-agents |

Supramolecular theranostic nano-agents were developed by aqueous assembly of peptide building blocks with paramagnetic metal ion-chelated moiety and cancer cell-targeting segment, respectively. Paramagnetic metal-attached scaffolds have attracted much attention as magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) contrast agents (CAs) for diagnostics. Many efforts have been devoted to enhance MRI efficacy of commercial CAs by adopting supramolecular scaffolds to overcome the disadvantages with low sensitivity/specificity. Here, we present the resulting nano-aggregates possess therapeutic effect by delivering hydrophobic anticancer drug model to target cells with regulated MRI-efficacy by morphology control of the nanomaterials. Further, correlation between the morphology of nano-agents and their bioactivities including diagnostic, therapeutic and even antimicrobial activity was elucidated. This study could present a useful approach for developing bespoke clinical nanomaterials with desired activities. |
