Natural strutural materials like bone or nacre, which consist of brittle minerals and a small amount of organic materials, exhibit significant improvement in damage tolerance due to their hierarchical microstructure. Over the decades, various experimental techniques have been utilized to synthesize hybrid materials with brick-and-mortar structure. One of examples is a freeze-cast alumina infiltrated with PMMA polymer, which showed exceptional crack-growth fracture toughness compared to their pure components. In this study, hybrid materials with alumina brick and metallic glass mortar was produced by a spontaneous melt infiltration technique. The effect of processing temperature and microstructure on the mechanical properties was systematically investigated. |
