Metal oxide nanoparticles have been used in a variety of bioapplications, including nano-sensor, biological imaging, and clinical treatments. Quite recently, several surface modification methods of rendering nanoparticles water-dispersible have been reported. Here, we report on the designed synthesis of PEG-derivatized phosphine oxide (PO-PEGs) ligands with biocompatible poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) tail groups and surface coordinating phosphine oxide head group for the purpose of displacing the hydrophobic ligands on the surface of the as-synthesized metal oxide nanoparticles, thereby stabilizing them in aqueous media. The synthesis of PO-PEG ligands and the modification of the nanoparticles with them are extremely facile and, thus, practical for the large-scale preparation of aqueous dispersion of nanoparticles. |
