Irradiated chitosan, guar gum and poly(vinylpyrrolidone) based (3-mercaptopropyl) trimethoxysilane crosslinked pH responsive hydrogels were fabricated for drug delivery applications. The hydrogels were characterized using swelling analysis, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, antibacterial analysis, and drug release analysis. Stimuli responsive hydrogels showed highest swelling index in acidic medium and trend decreased in neutral and basic medium. The hydrogels showed antibacterial effect against Listeria monocytogenes and Salmonella typhimurium bacteria. The hydrogels showed controlled release in PBS and SIF while all the drug was released in 30 min for SGF. These pH responsive hydrogels with excellent antibacterial characteristics and controlled drug release makes them suitable contender to be used in radio-drug delivery applications. |
