The cellulosic biomass consists of cellulose, hemicellulose, and lignin, which are the main components of wood. Lignin, which exists in most outer layers of wood components, is compose of huge aromatic compounds. Therefore, natural lignin can act as a raw material to produce plastic products, medications, and fine chemicals by decomposition, and can act as an alternative feedstock of the classical petroleum resources. For this reason, the development of the lignin degradation techniques is very important and it has a great ripple effect in the diverse industrial field. In this study, we demonstrated photocatalytic lignin photoconversion using plasmonic Au nanocatalysts and visible light. As a result, we found that lignin model compounds is selectively oxidized by the photocatalytic reaction. The oxidized lignin is expected to greatly contribute to the degradation of lignin because specific bonds like aryl ether bonds or C-C bonds can be easily cleaved. |
