Mass production of microalgae mostly takes place in open raceway ponds. Sunlight is one of the most important factors in the growth of microalgae. However, the deeper the medium, the weaker the light intensity because of light attenuation by water and microalgae. In this research, internal structures were applied to improve the vertical flow in an open raceway pond. This strategy may result in more exposure of microalgae cells to light for a sufficient amount of time to grow. Numerical simulation of fluid behavior was carried out for the open raceway pond with several sets of the installed internal structures by computational fluid dynamic (CFD) software, ANSYS CFX 16.2. Movement of microalgae cells in the pond with structures was investigated by particle tracking with CFD software (ANSYS FLUENT). |
