Because of potential applications, the assembly of submicro-meter-sized colloidal particles into ordered two-dimensional (2D) and three-dimensional (3D) structures, called colloidal crystals, has been intensively studies over the past decade. Recently, we have developed a new self-assembly method for fabricating well-ordered 2D and 3D colloidal crystals films. With minute amount of polystyrene colloidal suspension and without any special equipment, we can rapidly deposit high-quality colloidal crystals films over a large surface area. In this study, we discuss in detail the fundamentals of a single step confined convective assembly, along with the experimental results. And also we report a new approach for improving the quality and physical stability of colloidal crystals. Finally, we show binary colloidal crystals with 2D superlattices and polymeric nanostructured patterns fabricated via this method. |
