Chemical fixation of carbon dioxide by alternating copolymerizations of epoxides and carbon dioxide by using Zn/Co Prussian blue analogues |

Chemical fixation of CO2 is of great interest with respect to the development of truly environmentally benign processes, as there are many possibilities for CO2 to be used as not only a cheap and safety monomer but also nontoxic and nonflammable. The copolymerization of carbon dioxide with epoxides by using Zn/Co double metal cyanide catalyst in the presence of quaternary ammonium salts and ionic liquids were investigated in this study. The resultant copolymers are subjected to 1H NMR spectroscopy, infrared spectroscopy and gel permeation chromatography analyses. Some quaternary ammonium salts such as tetraoctyl ammonium chloride and tetradodecyl ammonium chloride were found to enhance CO2 reactivity dramatically. With double metal cyanide catalyst in the absence of any additives the carbonate content was estimated to be 18%, and the value reached to 80% in the presence of suitable quaternary ammonium salts. |
