Preparation of silica supported double metal cyanide catalysts and ring-opening polymerization of propylene oxide |

Double metal cyanide (DMC) complexes are well-known catalyst for the polymerization of epoxides and the synthesis of propylene oxide based polyether polyols which are used in a wide range of polyurethane applications. Polymerization of propylene oxide have been carried out by using silica supported DMC (Si-DMCs) catalyst prepared by reacting ZnCl2 and K3[Co(CN)6]2 in the presence of various complexing agent and various amount of tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS). The catalysts were characterized by elemental analysis, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, infrared spectroscopy, electron microscopy and X-ray powder diffraction. By controlling the ratio of Si/Zn, the type of complexing agent and the catalyst preparation method, the catalytic activity, induction period and the unsaturation level of polyether polyol could be tuned. The optimum amount of TEOS was found to be 5 g. |
