Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) have been attracting considerable interest due to their unique structure and outstanding mechanical and electrical properties. In efforts to utilize their properties, we focus on developing new chemical modification methods to introduce covalently attached well-defined polymer on the surface of CNTs using “living”/controlled radical polymerizations. For example, polystyrene was grafted from the sidewall of CNTs via surface-initiated Nitroxide-Mediated Polymerization or Atom Transfer Radical Polymerization (ATRP). As controlled radical polymerization can prepare various well-defined polymers, we believe that the developed methods would provide synthetic routes toward new CNT-polymer composite materials with controlled nanostructures. |
