Hydrotalcite Modified NaNO3-promoted MgO with improved cyclic stability for intermediate temperature CO2 sorption |

NaNO3 and other alkali nitrate salts have been reported to significantly promote or catalyze the dissolution of CO2 on MgO, but the stability and capacity of these adsorbents are not maintained upon regeneration. In this study, commercially available hydrotalcites with low and high MgO:Al2O3 weight ratios (30:70 and 70:30 wt) were used as supports for NaNO3-impregnated MgO sorbents in order to improve their cyclic stability. The surface characteristics of these adsorbents were determined using XRD and BET. Among the synthesized sorbents, 5wt% low ratio hydrotalcite-supported MgO provided the highest non-isothermal MgO conversion of 21.1% with an optimum isothermal adsorption temperature of 325°C. Cyclic tests revealed that the sorption capacity of this adsorbent increases upon regeneration and becomes stable at 34.8% MgO conversion.
