A novel hybrid single chamber microbial fuel cells (h-MFCs) is described in which a TiO2 nanotube array (TNT) photoanode is coupled with a MFCs. h-MFCs exhibits improved voltage (4%), current density (33%) and power density (14%), and while simultaneously degrading MB dye, 82.79% after 3.5 hr under simulated solar light illumination compared to conventional MFCs. The key factor for improved performance is the photogenerated electrons supply to the MFCs. hybrid-MFC strategy provides new design for productive and economical utilization of MFCs. |
