Lactic acid has been widely utilized in various fields including medical and food industry. In fermentation-separation processes, nanofiltration (NF) processes can be used to separate organic acid and other byproducts such as sugars and proteins. In this study, new NF membranes were prepared by grafting cationic polyelectrolyte on membrane surface to improve organic acid recovery during the separation processes of fermentation broth. Lactic acid rejection was efficiently reduced by electrostatic attraction between lactic acid and NF membrane while the rejection of glucose was not changed significantly. In this regard, NF membranes provide opportunities to recover organic acid from fermentation broth more efficiently. |
