White-rot fungi are important degraders of woody lignin and their secreted lignin peroxidases are thought to be responsible for the activity. It is also known that lignin peroxidase from Phanerochaete chrysosporium can decolorize the pigment in the skin, melanin, which make it a possible active ingredient in skin tone brighteners. In pursuit of identifying other sources for lignin peroxidases for cosmetic applications other than P. chrysosporium, we cultivated three different kinds of mushroom strains and found Bjerkandera adusta might be an option. Here we describe the preparation of B. adusta lignin peroxidase(s), and its characteristic activity on the model substrate, veratryl alcohol. |
