Effect of different fluorination method on capacitance of activated carbons |

The surface of activated carbons used as an electric double layer capacitor electrode was modified via different fluorination methods to investigate capacitance of activated carbons. The introducing fluorine functional groups on activated carbon were performed by fluorination, oxyfluorination, and hydrofluoric acid (HF) treatment. The specific capacitance of activated carbons increased significantly after oxyfluorination and HF treatment. This capacitance enhancement was derived from a synergistic effect of the increased electrochemical activity due to the formation of the fluorine or oxygen functional groups and the increase in the mesopore volume. These results demonstrate that a fluorination treatment on carbon surface effectively enhances specific capacitance. |
