Graphene is featured with wide applications in high performance polymer adhesives, polymer composites and transparent conductive films. However, the weak interactions between pristine graphenes and polymeric matrices would result in interfacial slippage when stress is increased to an extent, limiting the improvement of mechanical properties. In this study, photo-polymerizable methacrylate groups were incorporated on the surface of graphenes via a reaction between the surface hydroxyl groups of the as-received graphenes and 3-(trimethoxysilyl)propyl methacrylate. This methacrylated graphenes were mixed with siloxane oligomer, photoinitiator and monomer to fabricate UV-curable polymer/graphene composites. The methacrylated graphene was found to be effective in improving tensile properties of UV-cured polymer/graphene composites, due to chemical grafting to polymer matrix. |
